Coachlight Kitchen
Type Of Project: Kitchen Remodel
Size: 15’ x 15’ / 225 Square Feet
About the project:
My client needed a complete renovation of their kitchen. The layout was not working for their family of five. Despite appearing spacious, a closer look revealed many things the space was lacking.
They were cramped around a small table, which had been challenging when the children were younger, but now, with three teenagers, they found themselves constantly bumping into one another. The island lacked space for additional seating or food prep, and Insufficient storage was another concern. The kitchen was closed off to the dining room, causing congestion in the doorway whenever they entertained. Although the kitchen opened to the family room, it still felt disconnected. This family needed our help!
Our Favorite Part:
Transforming a Kitchen Without Expanding Its Size. Before you ask, “How did they do this?” I want to clarify that we did not increase the kitchen's square footage. Instead, we strategically removed walls to create an open space that allowed us to reconfigure the layout. The key focus for this kitchen was organization; everything needed a designated place. We opted for a cream hand-painted brushed finish on the perimeter cabinets and a striking deep navy-blue island. The beautiful Cambria quartz countertops seamlessly tie the entire area together.
Let’s begin with function, as that was the primary motivation for this renovation. How did we enhance the space for this family? We eliminated the wall separating the kitchen from the dining room, completely opening up the area and creating numerous possibilities. This design allowed for a spacious island that comfortably seats five, providing essential undercounter storage. We cleverly tucked away an in-drawer microwave, freeing up space above the range.
By gaining some space from the dining room, we were able to accommodate a 36-inch six-burner professional gas range, which was on the client’s wish list for their growing family. The wooden statement hood and backsplash are eye-catching features as well. Along the exterior wall, we installed an entire bank of lower cabinets along with accent lighting. This kitchen boasts impressive hidden storage solutions, including concealed appliance garages for the toaster oven, air fryer, and other small appliances. There’s also a medication rack, eliminating clutter on the countertop. The window overlooking the pool, serves as a convenient passthrough for snacks during the summer months.
Every member of this family was considered in the kitchen design, including Jack the dog! We created a dog feeding station that includes space for food and water, treats, and even a drawer for leashes. A hidden coffee and tea station with electrical outlets stores the coffee pot, K-cups, and mugs. To the left of the coffee station, there’s a narrow utility cabinet tucked away, to hide a broom and cleaning supplies, so everything has its place.
The farmhouse sink also gets its own moment in this kitchen; we removed a small portion of the wall that overlooked the family room. Now when the client is at the sink, they can also see what is happening in the family room. We eliminated the soffit and extended the upper cabinets to the ceiling for additional storage. A stone ledge provides a perfect spot for displaying art and ceramics. To the right of the sink, a pull-out drawer conceals paper towels, sponges, and garbage bags. And next to the dishwasher, we included hidden pull-out bins for garbage and recycling.
But there were some enhancements beyond the kitchen. The family room received an upgrade with built-in cabinets surrounding the fireplace, designed to match the navy-blue kitchen island. Drawers keep remote controls organized, while cabinet lighting showcases the family’s cherished items. Don’t miss the charming plaid tile surrounding the fireplace!
Last but certainly not least, let’s talk about the dining room chandelier, an exquisite find from an antique store. This beautifully hand-crafted bronze light fixture features teardrop crystals and tea light holders, making it truly one of a kind!
